Introduction of Notes;

Traditional Society and Culture
o China has very long and rich history date back 1000’s of years
Before 1911
o Last dynasty ended in 1911
o At the start of 20 th century China was largely rural

20% population lived in rural areas

⇒ Rural peasants poorer than urban counterparts but had more space/opportunity for agriculture

o Consisted of feudal states particularly during the Zhou days (when land was allocated/managed by local rulers in return for produce)
Confucianism – Still integral today
o As noted by Chen. Et. Al., influence of Confucianism in China = long standing adherence to certain moral and ethical codes such as;
⇒ Filial piety – The importance of fam. and respect for parents and ancestors. Youth hold elderly in high esteem
⇒ Frugality – To live with MINIMAL requirement, reduce waste and not indulge in unnecessary or expensive traits
⇒ Modesty – to act and dress in a conservative manger and demonstrate humility in accomplishments
⇒ Self-restrained – to control reactions and emotions
o Also had tendency to construct and promote elitism in social classes elevating role of male nobility as the gentry (ruling class), scholars and those in official positions (considered superior)
