Essay on the significance of Russia Campaign to the outcome of World War II (Conflict in Europe)
Evaluate the significance of the Battle of Stalingrad and the Russian campaign in leading to the Allied victory in the European War?
Beginning in June 1941, the Russian campaign and the subsequent Battle of Stalingrad were highly significant to the wholistic Allied victory in World War II on 2 September 1945. This campaign was highly significant as it exposed the flawed structure of the German command, highlighting that the Germans could be defeated. The momentum was shifted, permanently, to the Allies and their morale increased substantially whilst German offensives began to peter out. Having achieved little of its lebensraum aims, and gaining none of the resources, supplies and raw materials in Russia, the German war machine could not be sustained, both on the home front and on the battlefield. Although Allied victory in the European War was facilitated also by success in North Africa, Normandy, and the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, as well as Hitler’s foreign policy failures and the Allied numerical advantage, the Russian campaign remains highly significant to the outcome of the war in Europe.
