INFLUENCES ON HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (STEELS)
STAKEHOLDERS (SEGUEE)
- Employers – concerned with productivity and cost, handle HRM issues daily
- Employees – concerned with working conditions and pay, increased demand for flexibility
- Employer associations – promote interests of employers, represent in making of awards
o e.g. Australian Medical Association (AMA) - Unions – protect, represent and promote interests of employees
o e.g. ACTU – peak body of all unions
o e.g. TWU – transport workers union - Society – no direct influence, but workplace practices reflect behaviour upheld by society
- Government – most influential; establish legal framework that businesses must follow e.g.
WHS and taxation
o Fair Work Australia (federal organisation) facilitates 10NES, enterprise agreements,
collective bargaining agreements etc.
o Fair Work Commission - helps create agreements, determines annual safety netincreases, helps resolve disputes
LEGAL
- Refers to the legal framework, laws and government organisations that influence HR
o Main legislation for HR is Fair Work Act provides safety net + minimum entitlements,
enables flexible work conditions and prevents discrimination against an employee - Fair Work Australia is the governing body
- Employment contracts (casual, full time, part time) outline conditions of employment and pay
+ create set rights and obligations for both employers and employees
o Usually set out in the form of awards (standard) or enterprise agreements (negotiated
between employers/employees)
o Rights and obligations for employees: - Obey lawful and reasonable instructions of employer, exercise due care in work, be faithful to employer interests etc.
