SHORT ANSWERS

Annabelle and Elsie

Short Answers is Section I of the HSC common module exam and is worth 20 marks (45 minutes). It is worth the same amount of marks as the Past the Shallows essay so it is just as important.

Questions range from 1-10 marks and are in reference to a series of prescribed texts (around 3-4) that you have 10 minutes to read.

Common Module rubric;

  • Anomalies, paradoxes and inconsistencies in human behaviour and motivations
  • See the world differently, to challenge assumptions, ignite new ideas or reflect personally
  • Consider the role of storytelling throughout time in communicating and reflecting the human experience
  • Complexity of human qualities and emotions
  • Interpret and respond
  • Textual appreciation
  • The world of the text and the wider world
  • Purpose and context of texts

HSC Tips:

  • ALWAYS read the questions before the prescribed texts so you know what you have to look for.
  • Start with the question you find easiest
  • Pay attention to the amount of marks and directive verbs.
  • Try and include terms from the Common Module rubric
  • Can’t write on the stimulus booklet 🙁
  • Don’t ignore form and medium (they count as techniques)
  • Don’t recount the text

General rules

  1. What is the human experience?
  2. What is the message about that experience?
  3. How does the evidence prove the point?
