Describe and explain Jewish ethical teachings on environmental ethics
- The two key concepts of Jewish ethical teaching are proper conduct between an individual and God – caters for the religious aspects of life – and proper conduct between two or more people – allows for an ethical and just society
- Fundamental source of Jewish ethical guidance is the Torah
Basis of Jewish Ethical Teachings:
The Torah
- Jewish ethical system based on the Ten Commandments – form fundamental code of behaviour given by God to Moses, basis of covenant between Jewish people and God
- Ten Commandments always served as spiritual/moral guidelines for Jewish people – modern ethical problems addressed
- 613 Mitzvot in the Torah – cover all aspects of life
- Halacha applies equally to all Jewish people
- Ethical behaviour is divinely ordained
The Prophets
- Vision of the prophets has inspired Jews to fulfill ethics
- Judaism regards prophets as people who can distinguish between justice and injustice and have the courage to speak out
- Prophets offer a vision for a better future
- Speak on behalf of the weak and oppressed
- Shape prophetic Judaism – messenger from God
Rabbinic Ethical Teachings:
- Tzedekah – ‘hidden charity’ – those who practice tzedekah hide their identity so the recipients need not feel ashamed
- Gemilut Chasidim – ‘acts of loving kindness’ performed for no return eg. hospitality to strangers, visiting the sick, assisting the poor, accompanying the dead to the grave
Tikkun Olam – to ‘better’ or ‘repair’ the world – inspired concept of social justice, platform to fulfill tzedekah and gemilut chassadim
