PDHPE Improving Performance Critical Question 1: Training for Improved Performance
Compiled using PDHPE.net, Outcomes 2 Textbook and Teacher Notes
Training is essential for improving performance as it improves energy production, skill execution and muscle stress tolerance. A training programme should be the correct work volume and intensity to target the needs of specific individuals. A training program should seek overall improvement in skill, flexibility, strength, speed, endurance and power, as well as addressing the athletes nutritional needs.
Strength Training
Strength is the ability of a muscle or muscle group to exert a force against a resistance. Strength training is a general term for all types of exercise designed to improve strength and increase muscle size. Strength training can be applied to a range of programs, including the development of muscular endurance, general strength, power, body bulk and muscle tone. Programmes can be manipulated to meet the needs and capabilities of individuals. Strength training variables include;
➔ Repetitions, number of times and exercise is repeated without rest
➔ Repetitions maximum, the maximum weight that can be lifted a specified number of times
➔ Set, number of times repetitions are done in succession
➔ Resistance, weight or load
➔ Rest, period of time between exercises, sets or sessions
➔ Periodisation, the process of varying the training load over discrete periods of time
