Decline and fall of the Romanov’s
- Before the Russia revolution, Russia was a vast empire ruled by a feudal system of government. Feudal: different social groups with a king/tsar at the top. Special relationship with the group directly below him.
- 1850’s Russia is defeated by Britain, France and Turkey in the Crimean war.
- Loss in the Crimean war forces them to realise they need to modernise
- The changes that occurred threatened the tsarist autocracy,
- Rather than use political reform, Nicholas used political repression to maintain absolute authority,
- Increase opposition as threatened with revolution in 1905
- Introduction of reforms causes the tsar to rapidly undermine them
- 1914 the Tsar was isolated and unpopular
- WW1 led to a rise in nationalistic support but by 1916 discontent took over.
- Tsar blamed for the loss of WW1
- 1917 February, demonstrations broke out throughout St Petersburg
- Military high command said the Tsar needed to abdicate
- Tsar abdicates, ending the Romanov dynasty
