PERSONAL FACTORS – contribute to the role they adopt within groups.
Self-Esteem: An individuals’ self-perception, self-value and self-worth.
- High self-esteem → more likely to have self-confidence/belief
- Low self-esteem → feel like they have nothing to offer
Self-Confidence: If individuals are confident with their own abilities, more likely to take on a challenge
- Motivation → success in goal achieving
- Failure → low self-confidence – impacts on group cohesion
Sense of Belonging: Individuals in a group feel like they ‘fit in’ with others and their input is valued.
- High levels of self-fulfilment → sense of ownership to decisions
- Excluded → feel life is meaningless
Education: Level of education or work may shape the role an individual plays within a group.
- High-level education looked at for direction → motivate groups
- Low-level education lack skills for certain tasks → limited understanding
