Module B Essay: Wuthering Heights
A critical study and analysis of Wuthering Heights reveals the complexity of class tensions and conventions which existed throughout the Victorian era, and this influenced all the social classes, resulting in an oppressive and conflicting society. Wuthering Heights is a novel written by Emily Bronte in 1847 and closely follows the plotline of two families, the Earnshaws and the Lintons, as well as their complex relationship with Heathcliff, an orphan, who is in a doomed love with Catherine Earnshaw. This novel comprises of an unbelievably complex storyline, consisting of a frame narrative structure and multiple generations of characters. The tensions of class and convention are clearly evident through social mobility, contrast and romantic elements. Social mobility is a destructive barrier, leading to conflicts between the social classes; contrastive language places emphasis on the effects of changing social classes; and romantic elements are implemented to challenge social conventions during the Victorian era.
